Emily Ramirez is the deuteragonist of Close Enough, the wife of Josh Singleton, and the mother of Candice.

She is voiced by Gabrielle Walsh.

Biography

"Emily is logical, organized, a planner—everything her husband Josh is not. She’s a loving mother and a strong working woman who tries to have it all. Emily works as an assistant at FoodCorp, a boring job even by processed-food conglomerate standards. In her spare time, of which there is little, she performs comedy-rock songs with her friend Bridgette." ^[2]

Physical appearance

Emily is a Mexican-American woman in her early 30s with a light skin tone and medium length light brown hair mostly tied into a ponytail with a purple band. She stands at just under 5'4 in height. She wears a dark lilac sweater over a partially buttoned white dress shirt that has its sleeves rolled up near her elbows, navy pants that are rolled up near her calves, and reddish-brown boots with laces near the top.

When she was younger, she wore her hair down.

Personality

Although she is hard-working and rational, Emily also enjoys having fun like her husband. She is a loving mother and wife and cares for her family, but she suffers from stress, due to work, financials, and having to share an apartment with her and her husband’s two divorced friends and the chaos that comes with it. She often practices forms of escapism, either by playing video games or attending open houses.

Emily is a victim of peer pressure, and possibly has an inferiority complex. Having been described as a "doormat", she will go to great lengths to please people, including her boss, the "cool moms" at Candice's school, and her obnoxious friend from college, even when it inconveniences her friends and family and is a detriment to her as well.

Based on her personal style and her personality she appears to be tomboyish.

She is considerably much more sensible than her husband and roommates, often acting as the voice of reason, such as disapproving of Josh and Alex and/or Bridgette's antics, or prioritizing being a mom over her and Bridgette's band, and doubting that they’re ever going to "make it".

Skills/Habits

• Bilingual - She is shown to be highly skilled at speaking Spanish, likely due to the fact that she is apparently of Mexican descent.

• Acoustic guitar playing/singing/songwriting - Emily is shown to be talented in playing the acoustic guitar, singing, and songwriting. In Quilty Pleasures during the montage of the street orphans helping her and Josh make a quilt for Candice’s school project, she plays guitar and sings a song about it. The opening theme also depicts her playing her guitar and singing before bumping into Josh. She is also in a comedy rock duo alongside Bridgette, with the two of them writing either original comedy songs or ones based off of existing songs. They perform at local clubs and at a local coffee shop, although they’re lucky enough to even get a handful of people to pay attention to them. Emily’s busy life as a working mom has also made the band less of a priority to her, and she has voiced her doubts that it’ll ever be successful.

• Josh - She and Josh met sometime around 2007-2008^[3] and have been happily married for seven years^[4], and have survived numerous misadventures together.

• Candice - Emily loves her daughter deeply and only keeps her best interests at heart. Even though Josh loves Candice equally as much, Emily is the more responsible parent of the two (even though she has a habit of relying on various ill-advised means of escapism).

Friends

• Bridgette Hashima - Bridgette and Emily seem to know each other through Alex (and by extension Josh since he and Alex are best friends), but they are still best friends. Additionally, the two of them are apart of a comedy rock duo, working together as songwriters and performing at small clubs/a local coffee shop.

• Alex Dorpenberger - Emily and Alex are good friends, although Emily can find Alex quite odd.

• Becca - Becca was Emily’s so-called "friend" since college, who was selfish, vain, lazy, and rude. She would spend their time together going on about her own personal life and issues while taking practically no interest in Emily's life, to the point she can’t even remember she’s married with a daughter despite attending Josh and Emily's wedding as a bridesmaid and being in the delivery room alongside Josh when Emily was in labor with Candice. Emily still stuck by Becca and begrudgingly would meet up with her every now and again at Becca’s call due to having known her for so long and due to being a pushover. However, after putting up with her as a roommate for two weeks in "Houseguest From Hell" after unintentionally convincing her to break up with her boyfriend, who is actually Lucifer and who she then has breakup sex with and gets pregnant with his demon child, and Becca claiming that Emily was selfish, Emily had finally had enough, and tells Becca off and to get out of her house and her life for good. This doesn’t stick with Becca however and when she moves out the next day she tells Emily she’s cutting her out because she’s toxic and she can’t have that in her life now that she’s a mom, which she says is something Emily wouldn’t understand.

• She is of Hispanic descent.
  • Bridgette once referred to Emily as "Mexican", but she used air quotes when doing so.
  • In "Meet the Frackers", it is revealed that she has ancestors from Guadalajara.
  • Her voice actress is of African-American and Irish descent.
• In "The Perfect House", it is revealed that her last name is Ramirez, suggesting that she chose not to take her husband's surname.
  • Despite this, her name is listed as Emily Ramirez-Singleton on her phone, as seen in "Cyber Matrix".
• Her hairstyle is similar to that of Eileen from Regular Show.
• In early concepts for the show she originally wore a purple tank top, black leggings, and flat shoes. She has been shown wearing this outfit a few times in the actual show, such as in "Skate Dad" and "Snailin' It". Her hair was only slightly different as it was completely up in a ponytail besides her bangs, as opposed to now where a portion of it is worn loose in the back.
